This piece took a bit of time. I was initially trying to get a construction that was split half & half, with one half of the piece using excessively ornate frame, and the other half composed of pieces of trash lumber i'd picked up. That didn't work, so i had to rework it. I did use some of the discarded wood. Although it doesn't show up in these photos, the piece is actually 3 layers in depth.
The piece is from the 'Ergon/Parergon' series, with a large part of the 'main focus' of the piece completely or partially obscured. Here, the young ballerina is dancing in a garden-type setting, and behind/beneath her is the older peasant woman carrying her hoe, and overlaid on a 'pagan' cross (the second photo). I am particularly interested in what the relationship might be between these two women; is it literal, 'grandmother/mother/daughter', is it a metaphor for the young woman's life, or life in general? I don't know. I like that.
