Untitled/Tyranny of Words (2022)

As I mentioned in my bio, I usually work intuitively, with no planned outcome as to what the finished piece will be, very much like improvisation in music. Pieces seem to grow of their own accord, as they see fit, and sometimes it's quite a baffling process watching the direction that they decide to go, often despite my personal preferences. I've heard a number of novelists say the same thing about their creative process. This is one of those pieces.
Titling pieces can be a challenge. Because i rarely begin a piece with a thematic intent i often rely on thoughts or issues that have come to mind during the creation of the piece. And often the finished piece will excavate a strong thought or feeling that needs to be expressed.
The title of this piece comes from the fact that I am a self taught artist, and can be rather self conscious speaking about my work, compared to those with MFA's who have learned and adopted the jargon. I also personally get very little satisfaction from art that requires a written academic narrative in order to make sense of the piece.
So words are a burden to me in relation to my art practice.
Where it's been: Recently completed, not previously exhibited.

Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
