I spent some time in 2022 reworking pieces that I wasn't as happy with as i'd like to be. I am usually very happy with my finished pieces, and it really bothers me when I'm not. This is a piece that I love...now.
This is from a body of work entitled 'Ergon/Parergon', in which I have been deliberately confusing and/or obscuring the 'objet d'art' (Ergon) with the frame, or 'decoration' (Parergon). Thus the question, 'Just what is the art and what is the frame, or decoration?' I deliberately placed an image in a frame which is encased in another frame, and possible yet another. I have also been exploring the use of layers in my work, hiding images under other images, of which this is a prime example.
The actual object d'art is a small print of the 18th century painting commonly titled 'Blue Boy', but the correct title of which is 'Portrait of a Young Man', which I co-opted. I placed the black bar across his face (as per crime photos), and obscured it further with a large translucent glass circle and some rusted window screen. I included some leopardskin print mac tac, which for some reason seems to fit perfectly.
As a child, I had a medium sized Blue Boy on my wall until i was a teenager, when I received myself of it. Something about it felt creepy to me as a child, and as a result, I have never liked it....until now!
